Phase-Down in the Recovery of Refrigerant Gases: Recycling and Regeneration According to EN378 - Part 1

How many times have we heard that the United States innovate, China copies and the European Union regulates? A lot. How true is all this for the temperature conditioning market? Same.

In the two-year period of 2018-2020 a 37% reduction in the quantity of fluorinated gases is expected compared to 2015. How do you get to such a result, though? First of all, with the migration towards refrigerant gases with lower GWP; then with a price increase and a lower availability of gases with higher GWP. Moreover, in the event of total replacements of pre-installed systems or new applications, ever more often natural gases are being used.

Furthermore, pursuant to Article 13 of Regulation 517/2014, which, on one hand prohibits the use of greenhouse gases with a heating potential of 2500 or more for assistance and maintenance of equipment with a refrigeration load of 40 tons of CO2 or more, on the other hand it regulates the life of refrigerant gases extending their lifespan: for those with high GWP, alternative measures are envisaged for disposal, namely recycling and regeneration, already envisaged by the 2015 EU guide.

Let's talk about data: the Fgas Consultation Forum tells us that the regeneration has doubled but it is still too low as equivalent to 5% of production. To combat the confusion that arises in the sector, therefore, Assofrigoristi presented a guide for gas recovery and recycling at MCE Expocomfort 2018.

However, it is essential to specify that the recycled gas cannot be used except in other equipment similar to those from which it is extracted, and that, unfortunately, the technical regulations are definitely not very comprehensive. Moreover, even the real cleaning of the gas is questioned. Therefore, Linea 3C promotes the distribution of the new Copeland, Daikin and Bitzer compressors, as well as the well-known Italian ones such as Dorin and Frascold, to help give everyone a cleaner future.
