The North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council (NASRC) - a non-profit organization that works with the supermarket industry to promote the adoption of natural refrigerants - has launched a unique library of on-demand presentations for technology solutions with natural refrigerants, both for new and existing systems.
Due to the high global warming potential (GWP) of traditional hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (HFC), supermarkets are facing increasing regulatory pressures for the transition to low-GWP refrigerant technologies.
Natural refrigerants, including ammonia, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, are at the same time the most climate-friendly solution and the most effective way for supermarkets to achieve regulatory compliance. But high initial costs and other market barriers prevented their widespread adoption, helping to create uncertainty around GWP's low-level technologies that can best meet the needs of each supermarket.
"We heard from our Retail members that there was a lack of information about viable natural refrigerant technology options," said Danielle Wright, NASRC executive director. "Retailers must fully understand the advantages and compromises of each technological option, in order to make solid decisions and move effectively with the increase in refrigerant regulations"
To meet this challenge, NASRC hosted a webinar series in which NASRC members presented the latest offerings of natural refrigerant technologies. Presentations also focused on options for existing stores, which are particularly demanding as they require expensive total or partial replacement of the system to allow the use of natural refrigerants. For a limited time, NASRC has made all webinar recordings available for free on request in a new library of natural refrigerant technologies.
"Our goal with this action is to help supermarkets and their partners learn about natural refrigerant technologies that meet their needs in new and existing stores," said Wright. "This information is also critical for policy makers and utilities to make decisions that will shape energy and refrigerant regulations."
NASRC is supported by over 24,000 US supermarkets and over 130 organizations they represent
