Frigoblock, one of the leading manufacturers of transport refrigeration units in Europe and a brand of Thermo King®, supports Mångbergs Åkeri, a Swedish long-haul transport company, in its path to electrification of its fleet of refrigeration systems.

The latest project involved installing the FK25 electric refrigeration unit on a Scania V8 truck and adding the Frigoblock alternator to power both the truck-mounted FK25 unit and the Thermo King SLXi refrigeration unit on the drawbar semi-trailer.

Thanks to the innovative design of the Frigoblock alternator and the technology of the transmission kit, Mångbergs Åkeri can reduce its environmental impact and experience the benefits of a high-capacity hybrid refrigeration system in long-term road transport operations.

The brand new Scania truck from the Mångbergs Åkeri fleet, together with the drawbar semi-trailer, creates an almost 24 meters long trailer truck. Running on HVO biofuel, the truck with a V8 engine operates on routes of approximately 600 kilometers a day, seven days a week. Frigoblock was asked to provide a refrigeration system capable of delivering sufficient cooling capacity for both the truck and the semi-trailer, running on electricity.

The Frigoblock team chose the proven FK25 unit for the truck. To run it with the Scania V8 engine and maximize engine power, the team installed a new hydraulic-driven alternator kit. The hydraulic transmission kit provides enough power from the Scania V8 engine not only to power the electric FK25 unit, but also for the Thermo King SLXi refrigeration unit mounted on the drawbar semi-trailer. This allows Mångbergs Åkeri to run refrigeration units on electricity immediately when the truck is turned on and to benefit from a fully electric refrigerated truck and hybrid trailer truck.

The refrigeration of Frigoblock also meets the strict requirements relating to the circulation of air inside the truck. The load compartment, divided in two by the hydraulic floors, requires the refrigeration unit to provide sufficient capacity to circulate the air evenly and ensure the same temperature level throughout the space and in all environmental conditions.
