Embraco, global supplier of refrigeration technology for the entire residential and commercial cold chain, and a brand in the Nidec Global Appliance portfolio, presented a new case study on June 7, in collaboration with OEM manufacturer Hussmann, which indicates up to 29% energy savings after switching from a fixed speed to a variable speed compressor, both running on natural refrigerants. The study was made with two Hussmann Grab N' Go freezers, refrigeration equipment typical of convenience stores and supermarkets.

This case study was presented at the latest Atmosphere America Summit, in Washington D. C., on June 7-8, which brought together industry experts, institutional regulators, end-users, manufacturers and contractors to discuss the latest developments in solutions based on natural refrigerants.

Hussmann, a major North American multinational brand, part of Panasonic, specializing in commercial refrigeration equipment, has selected the Embraco FMFT variable speed compressor for its new portfolio of variable speed applications, the MicroSC, which includes Grab N’ Go freezers, closed vertical cabinets, and freezer cabinets in island and horizontal versions.

The case study was made with two Grab N' Go vertical freezers that differed in the number of doors. On the three door freezer, two Embraco NT fixed speed compressors have been replaced by two FMFT units, with an energy saving of 29% and a 13.5% reduction in the temperature variation of the products, ensuring better food preservation.

The other application is a two-door Grab N' Go freezer: Also in this case an Embraco NT compressor has been replaced by an FMFT, showing a 19% reduction in energy consumption and a 35% reduction in product temperature variation.

The Embraco FMFT is part of the FMF portfolio, the most energy efficient range of commercial refrigeration compressors in its cooling capacity category. It has a maximum displacement of 14.7cc, which is equivalent to a 20.5cc (60Hz) fixed speed compressor, thanks to its overdrive function. It is also dual voltage, which means that it operates at 110V and 220V. It uses variable speed technology, which means that the compressor adapts its operating speed according to the required load of the refrigeration equipment, resulting in a noticeable reduced energy consumption compared to fixed speed compressors.
